What is Iron
Iron is an essential trace mineral in the body, found in all human cells. It's required as a cofactor in hundreds of biochemical processes and is vital for oxygen transportation around the body.
For optimal health, iron needs to be consumed daily from diet and/or supplementation. The most bioavailable form of iron is found in animal products and is known as heme iron.
Benefits of Iron
- Produces hemoglobin needed for healthy red blood cells
- Transports oxygen around the body
- Enhances energy and performance
- Supports cognitive function
How it Works
IAs a cofactor in DNA synthesis and many enzymatic processes, iron is necessary for growth and development, a healthy metabolism, and many other aspects of health.
Its main role involves producing a protein called hemoglobin, which is needed for the formation of healthy red blood cells. Hemoglobin is responsible for binding to and transporting oxygen throughout the body and transferring it from the lungs to all of your living cells. A portion of iron is also found in myoglobin in muscle cells, allowing muscles to easily store and use oxygen.
Life can't exist without oxygen. Optimizing your iron levels ensures efficient oxygen transportation to every cell in the body, supporting the production of cellular energy (ATP) by the mitochondria. Without sufficient iron, the oxygen-carrying capacity of red blood cells drops, resulting in anemia, confusion, fatigue, reduced aerobic performance, and weakness.
Oxygen and energy demands are particularly high in muscle tissue and the brain, making iron a critical nutrient for optimal physical performance, neurological health, and cognitive function.
It's recommended that women of child-bearing age consume 18mg of iron daily, while men need 8mg. Plus, iron demand increases during pregnancy, with the recommended dose moving to 27mg per day. But, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), iron deficiency is one of the most common micronutrient deficiencies worldwide. Factors like aging, pregnancy, vegan and vegetarian diets, intense exercise, heavy menstrual periods, and poor digestive function all impact your ability to get enough iron. This makes a daily iron supplement a convenient and useful way to meet your daily requirements.
