What is Zinc
Zinc is the second most abundant trace mineral in the body, with high levels found in the skin, bones, muscles, brain, liver, eyes, and prostate gland. It's used for cellular growth and regeneration, fighting free radical damage, strengthening immunity, and promoting healthy skin and eyesight.
As an essential mineral, zinc can't be synthesized in the body and needs to be consumed daily from diet and/or supplementation. Some of the best dietary sources of zinc are seafood, red meat, chicken, eggs, and dairy products. It's also found in legumes, whole grains, dark chocolate, nuts, and seeds – although in a less bioavailable form.
Benefits of Zinc
- Involved in cellular growth, development, and regeneration
- Provides powerful antioxidant properties to prevent oxidative cell damage
- Supports a strong immune system
- Promotes cell renewal and collagen synthesis for glowing skin
- Essential for protecting healthy eyesight and reducing age-related vision loss

How it Works
Zinc is a vital cofactor in cellular growth and repair, DNA synthesis, and hundreds of different metabolic reactions in the human body.
Zinc is most commonly obtained from animal products, so vegans and vegetarians are at increased risk of low zinc levels. Additionally, factors like aging, poor digestion, pregnancy, smoking, excess alcohol consumption, and certain medications increase your risk for zinc deficiency. You may be low in this mineral if you experience frequent infections, fatigue, acne, slow wound healing, changes in smell and taste, infertility, or poor concentration.
A cofactor in the formation of an antioxidant called superoxide dismutase (SOD), zinc helps the body fight oxidative damage by neutralizing unstable free radical molecules like superoxide. This is significant because free radicals cause cell damage, premature signs of aging, chronic inflammation, and chronic disease.
Probably most well-known for supporting a strong immune system, zinc is needed to activate important white blood cells called "killer" and "helper" T-lymphocytes or T-cells.
Zinc is necessary for healthy skin, with a significant portion found in the epidermis or upper layer of skin. One of the many zinc-dependent enzymes is necessary for the synthesis of collagen. This abundant structural protein in the body promotes wound healing and skin hydration, strength, and elasticity.
Zinc is also found concentrated in the retina where it supports the integrity of the eye and may reduce oxidative damage to the delicate structures in the eye.
