What is Evening Primrose

Evening primrose oil comes from the seeds of the evening primrose plant – also known as Oenothera speciosa – native to North America. Cold-pressed evening primrose oil is packed with omega-6 fatty acids gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and linoleic acid as well as the antioxidant vitamin E. It's a popular supplement for reducing inflammation, boosting skin health, and supporting hormone balance.

How it Works

Omega-6 fatty acids don't get much attention, but they are critical for a healthy body. Evening primrose oil (EPO) provides you with the omega-6 fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) that forms the building blocks for cell membranes, healthy skin, hormones, and the protective coating around nerve fibers.

GLA gets converted into dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) in the body, a precursor to the anti-inflammatory compound prostaglandin series 1 that helps to inhibit inflammatory compounds. As chronic inflammation is a precursor to several chronic diseases, consuming EPO may help to reduce this risk factor.

EPO may also be useful for balancing hormonal symptoms in both younger and older women. Research suggests GLA helps to minimize premenstrual syndrome (PMS) by reducing symptoms of irritability, breast tenderness, and water retention. Additionally, in menopausal women, evening primrose oil may improve quality of life by reducing the severity, duration, and frequency of hot flashes.

Evening primrose oil promotes a healthy skin barrier and glowing appearance. By building cell membranes, reducing inflammation, and balancing hormones naturally, EPO is a great supplement for reducing acne and signs of premature aging.

Additionally, EPO may also be an invaluable supplement for those with uncomfortable, inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. Evidence suggests eczema sufferers have low GLA levels due to an impairment in the enzyme delta-6-desaturase that converts linoleic acid to GLA in the body.
