What is Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin – pronounced asta-zan-thin – is a naturally occurring anti-aging compound that's backed by over 1000 scientific studies. This natural reddish pigment forms part of the carotenoid family of compounds. Microalgae, such as Haematococcus pluvialis, produce astaxanthin in response to stressful conditions (think harsh sunlight) as a protective mechanism, and then krill, salmon, shellfish, crab, and shrimp feed on the algae. Astaxanthin accumulates in the tissues of these marine animals, which is how they obtain their pinky-red color!
Sometimes called the "king of carotenoids", astaxanthin is one of nature's most powerful antioxidants and is estimated to be 50 times stronger than beta-carotene.

How it Works
Astaxanthin is an anti-aging health supplement that's popular for promoting joint, skin, eye, brain, heart, and muscle health. It boasts powerful health benefits thanks to its content of amazing antioxidant and longevity-promoting properties. By donating electrons to unstable free radicals, astaxanthin can neutralize these compounds and protect you from oxidative cell damage, chronic inflammation, and signs of premature aging.
It has a unique lipophilic and hydrophilic structure, meaning it's soluble in water and fat. It becomes part of the cell membrane to protect your cells from the inside as well as the outside, giving you extra antioxidant coverage!
Loading up on antioxidants like astaxanthin improves your appearance as you age. It promotes healthy, glowing skin by defending delicate skin cells from degradation due to aging, environmental pollution, and UV-damage. Clinical studies have found it improves skin elasticity, reduces moisture loss, and minimizes crow's feet wrinkles and age spots.
Consuming extra carotenoids – like astaxanthin – may be able to support the health of the eyes by absorbing some of the harsh sunlight, fluorescent lighting, and blue light from screens that bombard you daily. It preserves your eyesight as you age by protecting the delicate structures in your eyes from oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.
The powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of astaxanthin make it invaluable for athletes and people engaging in intense exercise. It helps you to get the most out of your workout by supporting joint mobility, muscle recovery, and performance.
Additionally, astaxanthin is a potent heart-protective antioxidant that works to inhibit oxidative stress, inflammation, and the oxidation of "bad" LDL cholesterol – all precursors to blood vessel damage and hardening of the arteries.
